When working in SketchUp, one of the most common interruptions in the modeling flow is a simple question: “What are the dimensions of this object?”
Whether you are designing architectural spaces, furniture, interiors, or technical layouts, checking width, depth, and height happens constantly. Yet SketchUp still requires users to interrupt their workflow by using the Tape Measure tool, adding temporary dimensions, or opening extra panels.
That friction is exactly why I created SketchUp Instant Dimensions.

The Problem: Checking Dimensions Breaks Flow
In real-world SketchUp workflows, users often need quick size feedback:
- Architects verifying room proportions
- Designers checking furniture clearances
- Woodworkers validating part sizes
- Makers ensuring components fit within constraints
Yet SketchUp does not provide a simple, always-visible way to see the dimensions of a selected object. Instead, users must:
- Activate the Tape Measure tool
- Manually click edges or points
- Add temporary dimensions that clutter the model
- Repeat this process dozens of times per session
Over time, these small interruptions add up and slow down modeling significantly.

The Solution: Instant Dimensions in the Status Bar
SketchUp Instant Dimensions solves this problem by displaying live measurements directly in SketchUp’s status bar.
When you select an entity; group, component, or multiple objects, the extension instantly shows:
- Width (X)
- Depth (Y)
- Height (Z)
The measurements update automatically as your selection changes and disappear when nothing is selected. There are no dialogs, no overlays, and no extra tools to activate.
It feels like a native SketchUp feature because it behaves like one.
Why Live Dimensions Matter for Architecture & Productivity
In architectural and design workflows, speed and clarity are critical. Live dimensions help by:
- Allowing instant size verification without stopping modeling
- Reducing visual clutter from temporary dimensions
- Keeping focus on design decisions instead of measurement tools
- Improving accuracy when working at scale
Because the extension uses the selection’s bounding box, it works reliably with groups, components, and multi-selection making it ideal for layout checks, space planning, and proportion control.

Designed to Be Simple (On Purpose)
SketchUp Instant Dimensions is intentionally minimal:
- No menus
- No settings
- No configuration
- No visual overlays
You select an object, read the measurements, and keep modeling.
This design keeps the interface clean and avoids the complexity and maintenance overhead found in heavier measurement or reporting extensions.

Version 2.0 Update: Smarter Measurements and Real User Feedback
Since the first release, users sent valuable feedback and real workflow examples. Version 2.0 is a major upgrade built from that input.
One of the most useful messages came from Peter.L (Creative Lead at Greenspan Projects Ltd) who highlighted practical measurement needs in production work. That helped shape several improvements in this release.
What’s New in Version 2.0
Accurate local axis measurements
Groups and components are now measured using their own local axis. Rotated objects now return true Width, Height, and Depth values instead of inflated diagonal sizes.
Better face measurements
Single faces are now measured in their own plane. This works correctly for vertical, horizontal, triangular, L-shaped, and irregular faces.
Edge, arc, and circle readings
The extension now detects:
- Edge Length
- Arc Length
- Circle Circumference
- Total Length of connected edges
Scaled component detection
If a component or group has been scaled, Instant Dimensions flags it with "| scaled" and shows the original definition size. This helps you spot when the visible size differs from the stored component dimensions. For accurate final values, use "Scale Definition" first.
Copy dimensions to clipboard
You can now copy the last measured result directly from the extension menu and assign a keyboard shortcut if needed.
Status bar persistence
Measurements remain visible for a few seconds after selection, making them easier to read.
Multi-file support
Version 2.0 now works correctly across newly opened SketchUp files in the same session.
Final Thoughts
Small workflow improvements make a big difference over time.
By providing instant, always-available dimension feedback, SketchUp Instant Dimensions removes one of the most common interruptions in everyday modeling.
If you frequently check object sizes while designing, this extension will
quietly save you time every single session.
