You have probably been sent a new Sketchup 2013/2014/2015 or 2016 file and tried to open it on an older version then you got an Error: "The file was created in a newer version of SketchUp", don't worry you don't need to own a new software version to down save this file to the previous SKP versions.

For some reasons I still use Sketchup 8, and most of the time people send me
newer versions files which I can't open or use, one may think a new version
is required to be able to open the file but it's not the case, there is a
trick to convert any new version file to the previous and older versions
from V8 to V2015 without using Sketchup.
Here is how to convert a Sketchup file to older version online: first go to
to the
Sketchup 3D Warehouse
register or use your Google account to login.
Upload your model to the warehouse (you can make it private or delete it
once you are done converting) and wait for it until it finishes uploading
and processing (depends on your 3d model file size).

Now you can download your 3d model as any other previous version down to V8,
for versions below V8 you will need Sketchup to do it.

In case you already own a new Sketchup version and you want to down save
your model to an older version, you can just save the model as from the file
menu File > Save as and chose from the save as drop down
list the desired file Version (available down to V3).

Update 02/02/2017 : Conversion is still possible, upload your model
and wait until it's fully processed, click the download button all lower
versions will appear.

Update 02/14/2017 : Conversion is still possible, but download
buttons are hidden, you can download V8 and V13 from the warehouse just by
copying the direct download the link from any version V17 to V14 and change
it to V13 or V8.

Update 04/16/2017 : Trick is not working anymore for versions below 2014 (it works for old 3D Warehouse uploads), try to download DAE Collada format and import it to Sketchup.

What is the file is more than 50 mb ? I got the file which is 67 mb, and I want to convert in to the lower version. it is in version 2017.
You can download a pro trial version and use it only for conversion, make version should work too, try to purge your model, use components instead of groups etc to reduce the size...
Another option is export your model first as KMZ then upload, it will be compressed and size will decrease a lot
now please suggest another option as only 2016 version is available
Conversion is still possible for the moment through 3dwarehouse, although it says V8 and V13 will no longer be available.
tried converting in v8 it doesnt show the option of v8/v13 only v16. plz help
Wait until your model is fully processed and you will see the other versions , as when you upload it without waiting it will only show the original version.
Is there a another solution to this ? There now are definitly no V8 versions to download. Only v14 and above.

i tried to download v13 but there's no v13 . so i tried what you said above to change =s15 to =s13 . its not working.
it says :

is there any solution about this ?
You need to wait until the model is processed, this method works for the models you upload, and the ones already available at 3Dwarehouse, and you can even download V7 and V6 depending on the original file.
V8 version is not included in the Download dropdown menu!

You need to wait until it's fully processed, if you don't wait only the original version will appear.
Download trial/make version to do the conversion, or use https://my.sketchup.com/app
open and purge your model, deleted some components or split it, then use the warehouse to downgrade.
It works for s13 but not for s8 :(

I skp file size of 70 MB, while that may be uploaded at warehouse limit is 50 mb ....

Split your file on two parts here http://my.sketchup.com/ , then upload to the warehouse, later download the collada DAE verison, as this method is no longer working

Yes for V13 and below use DAE format, it may work with some old 3dwarehouse uploads not new ones

It is still works now.
But I found more successfully to download SU8 version files. Sometimes it is not possible to download SU14 files but for SU8 files works well.
